Got Service?

Strengthen Your 12 Step Recovery by offering service to OA membersOur Region III Twelve Step Within (TSW) Committee reminds us that next month, December 12th, is the Annual TSW day to remember 12th step work. Some suggestions are: plan a reunion for past and present members, offer to drive someone to a meeting, conduct in-home meetings for shut-ins, write an article for your newsletter or Lifeline, send 12 “miss you” cards to absentee members, call 12 newcomers, call 12 members who no longer attend meetings.

A local member offered these suggestions on service…

People share on the importance of “service” as part of their program…but what does that actually look like? It is often thought of as a major undertaking, thus something one would hesitate to consider seriously. It can actually take on many different versions and fully qualify as legitimate service. With the intention of strengthening your recovery, here are some options you might consider:

  • setting up or putting away chairs
  • putting out or picking up literature
  • calling a newcomer
  • calling someone you don’t normally call
  • offering to lead a meeting
  • welcoming people as they arrive at a meeting
  • visiting a meeting you don’t normally attend
  • talking to a newcomer after a meeting
  • offering to be a speaker
  • sharing your talents at an OA function…
  • willing to add creativity to fliers
  • willing to be a “temporary sponsor
  • willing to listen to someone’s 5th step
  • willing to listen to someone’s food
  • attending a workshop
  • while attending a workshop, offering to sit at literature table
  • while attending a workshop, offering to mc it
  • while attending a workshop, offering to set up drinks

Service is an attempt to get out of oneself; to break down the walls of our self-centeredness and isolation….to step out into the “solution.” Give it a try….it can only change your life!

How about discussing with your home meeting ways that you can elevate and invigorate your program by making a difference to those still suffering from compulsive eating behaviors!
