OA On Air and In the News

Overeaters Anonymous is making waves, airwaves that is, on CBS’ new situation comedy, Mike & Molly airing Monday nights at 7:30PM MT. KENS 5 TV in San Antonio used the show’s debut as an opportunity to write about OA and its mission including several interviews with local OA members.

OA members interviewed had mixed emotions about the show; happy that it gives OA exposure but not pleased that the focus is too much on the food and the pounds. As one member stated, “It gets the word out there that OA exists, but makes it about the food instead of a serious mind, body, spirit problem…” While another mentioned he did not like the show because “…food addicts come in all shapes and sizes. We are not all obese. In fact, the rooms are full of people who have achieved a normal body weight.”

The reasons that the OAers interviewed cited for belonging to OA were pretty similar; the program works, if you work it and you persevere:

One member expressed, “The program of OA has given me a new way of life without any of the shame, guilt, remorse, or alienated relationships…The problem has been removed.”

Another related, “After a while in OA, I realized that I ate to cover up feelings with which I couldn’t cope. My coping method was eating to numb my uncomfortable feelings…OA has so many ways for me to feel the feelings and to mitigate them.”

While a third said, “I have been given a whole new way of living beyond anything I could have ever dreamed up on my own…”
