Why I Serve – Anonymous

I do service in a variety of ways in OA. I find that each way I do service has its rewards. It is always a great way to “get out of myself ” and to focus on the needs of others rather than the “me, me, me” scenario that I can so easily get stuck in. Service at any level, helps to insure that OA will be there for me, so in that respect, it is a very selfish reason for doing service.

I also find that it is a way for me to “practice” being out of my comfort zone. I know that the only way things will get easier and more comfortable, is by being uncomfortable, fearful, or whatever the feeling, and doing those things anyway. Amazingly, I find that each time I step out of my comfort zone and ask for God’s help, and for the help and support from those around me, things do get easier, less daunting and/or fearful. I am seeing what a gift it is to be able to practice and try new things, with the loving and supportive people in OA. I can’t think of any better place to make a mistake, fail in some way, or do things less than perfectly, than in the OA arena.

I find that service helps to keep me grounded and centered on God. I am constantly seeking God’s help and guidance when lack of experience leaves me clueless on how to handle situations that come up in life. It is such a great reminder to me that God is always present and willing to guide me. All I need to do is to ask!

I love the new people I meet. They bring new perspectives and energy to the issues that are brought up. It helps me to realize that there are many solutions to most problems/issues and more than one way to view the world. It enlightens me to the gray areas rather than seeing things only as black or white. Now that is truly a HUGE gift!!

Doing Service in OA helps your recovery even more than those you serve
